The Mooning of the Amtrak is an held every year on the second Saturday of July in the area of Mugs Away Saloon in Laguna Niguel, CA (Orange County). Thousands of people gather to drop their pants or lift their skirts along the fence as the Amtrak trains pass by. The trains are normally packed full this day and even slow down so that the passengers can enjoy the show fully. Over the past couple of years it has turned into much more then just a mooning...now it is a festival similar to a Mardi Gras Celebration. The street is line with all types of vendors, party RVs and hundred of people who come out to be part of this ever growing party. Between trains you may see an impromptu wet t-shirt contest, girls getting naked in blow-up pools and lots of flashing for beads. Be warned, this event is not for the kids or anyone who may be offended by exhibitionism or public nudity.
The mooning takes place along the train track fence across the street from Mugs Away Saloon at 27324 Camino Capistrano, Laguna Niguel, California 92677 (map). To get there exit the I-5 freeway at Avery Parkway (in South Mission Viejo area), make a right and then another immediate right where Avery dead ends at the train tracks, then follow the train tracks until you see all of the crazy people (about 1.2 miles). If you get there early (before 9am or so) you may find parking close to the event or you can drive past the event and park on the north end of the street. If you get there anytime later than that, we recommend you take the first spot you see coming up Camino Capistrano and walk in. If you have a motorcycle, I recommend you bring it...motorcycles can get all the way in and always find parking right in the heart of things. You may also consider bringing along your bicycle and parking down the street and riding in. This is also a great way to cruise up and down the entire length of the mooning and see everything. And there is always the option of taking the train in. The MetroLink (NOT the Amtrak) has a stop about 3/4 miles from the event...the Laguna Niguel - Mission Viejo station. You can easily park and board the train at the Irvine station.
The Mooning of the Amtrak takes place each year on the Second Saturday of July. The 30th Annual Amtrak Mooning is scheduled for July 11, 2009.
The party starts early, normally there are a good number of people that spend Friday night at the location in their RVs, and plenty more that show up first thing in the morning. The Mooning usually starts with the first Amtrak train in the morning which passes by around 7:30 am. and goes right up until the last train just before midnight. However the majority of people are normally there to moon the trains and enjoy the festivities from around 10:00 am until about 5:00 pm. The evening and afternoon mooning is a little more mellow with a lot less people.
Will will post the complete days Amtrak schedule as the event nears.
Oh you would be amazed at the things I have seen people bring to the Mooning of the Amtrak...I have seen stripper poles, swimming pools, foosball tables, full bars, vibrating recliner chairs and just about everything else (check out our Mooning Photo Albums to see some of the wild things people bring. But here are some necessities and tips to make your "Mooning" more pleasurable.
What You Should Bring:
What Else You Can Bring:
What You Should NOT Bring:
Nobody! No one organizes, sponsors or is responsible for the Mooning of the Amtrak. The event is an open event which grows by word of mouth. It is up to each and every attendee to keep the mooning safe, clean and legal. Please act responsibly and clean up after yourself and this event will continue to be a free & open festival.
No one knows for sure how it started, but legend has it that in 1979, at The Mugs Away Saloon, a K.T.Smith told his buddies he'd buy a drink for all who would run outside to the rail road tracks and "moon" the next train, which many did. The mooning tradition prevailed and each and every year since then more and more people show up to drop their pants and moon the passing Amtrak trains. Metrolink commuter trains started weekend operation on this track in Summer 2006 giving the mooners even more opportunities throughout the days to drop their inhibitions (and pants).
